It is an anti-viral drug used in the treatment of chronic HBV (hepatitis B virus) infection.
Hepatitis B infection is the infection of liver which is caused by virus named as hepatitis B. It is also used in HIV patients infected with HBV and to prevent the cases of HBV superinfection in patients with liver transplant.
It works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptaseenzyme which thus prevents the multiplication of hepatitis B virus in body

Some of the common side-effects are:
- Increase in sugar level
- Decreased kidney function

- Liver disorders
- Fatty liver
- Liver enlargement
- Lactic acidosis (acid build up in the blood)
