What Are The Uses Of Tigecycline?
Tigecycline is used to treat number of bacterial infections, which became resistant to other commonly used antibiotics.
Tigecycline is most commonly used to treat multi drug resistant and mixed infections like:
- Complicated skin and structure infections
- Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections
- Acute myeloid leukemia (cancer of the myeloidline of blood cells)
It is usually used in intravenous dosage.
What Are The Side Effects Of Tigecycline?
Tigecycline can cause watery diarrhoea and allergic reactions (hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat), dizziness, nausea, headache vaginal itching or discharge, sleep problems and vision problems.
Consultation of doctor is needed upon observing following conditions.
- Blood in diarrhoea
- Severe pain behind the eyes
- Dark urine
- Black stool
- Sporadic heart rate
What Are The Contraindications Of Tigecycline?
Tigecycline should be used with extra care in medical conditions like clostridium difficile infection (a kind of colon infection), severe hepatic impairment, severe kidney problems, pancreatitis, (inflammation of the pancreas), stomach or intestinal ulceration, cystic fibrosis (genetic disorder leads to thick mucus production) and during pregnancy.
