What Are The Uses Of Tricalcium phosphate?

It is a calcium salt of phosphoric acid, also known as bone phosphate of lime. It occurs naturally in cow milk.

Most common use is to treat calcium deficiencies and conditions caused by calcium deficiency like osteoporosis (loss of bone density), osteomalacia (weakening of bone), hypoparathyroidism (decreased in activity of thyroid gland) and in some muscle disease.

It is also used in pregnant women and postmenopausal to fulfill calcium deficit and people taking drugs like phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone. 

What Are The Side Effects Of Tricalcium phosphate?

Mild side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Decreased appetite, constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased thirst
  • Polyuria (increased urination)

Severe side effects like swelling of facial organs (nose, lips, tongue, and throat) and breathing problem may need medical attention.

What Are The Contraindications Of Tricalcium phosphate?

It should be used cautiously with conditions like sarcoidosis (lumps of inflammatory cells known as granulomas), high amount of calcium in urine& blood, incomplete or infrequent bowel movements, kidney stone, kidney disease and poisoning by the heart medication Digitalis.
