    Health Benefits of Antioxidants

    Antioxidants are the substances or molecules which counteract the damaging effects of oxidation (chemical reaction producing free radicals). Basically, these inhibit the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation leads to chain reactions inside the body which may damage the cells. The antioxidants terminate these chain reactions and prevent the risk of diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis and many other. Antioxidants can be found in fruits, vegetables, and supplements.

    Some of the most commonly studied antioxidants are:

    1. Beta-carotene: Beta-carotene is an antioxidant and a carotenoid. It is a type of red or orange color pigment found in vegetables and fruits. It is converted into Vitamin A by the body. Foods such as Apricots, Broccoli, Carrots, and Grapefruits etc are rich in Beta-carotene. These are helpful in reducing the risk of cancer and heart diseases. It is also found beneficial in slowing down the cognitive decline and keeping lungs healthy.
    2. Lycopene: It is an important antioxidant with a variety of amazing benefits. It has strong ability to inhibit free radicals causing cell damage. It also another type of pigment found in tomatoes. It can also be consumed through fruits and vegetables. It is found beneficial in cancer treatment, keeping eyes, bones, brain, and heart healthy. Foods such as tomatoes, watermelons, papaya, mango, grapefruit, and red cabbage are excellent sources of Lycopene.
    3. Vitamin C: It is also known as ascorbic acid and is a water-soluble vitamin. It helps in the synthesis of collagen and makes muscles and blood vessels strong. It is an immunity booster also.     4. Coenzyme Q10: It is a super powerful antioxidant. It is used in cancer prevention and various heart diseases. It helps to treat infertility, migraine, arrhythmia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease. Coenzyme Q10 is found in broccoli, spinach, wheat germ, whole grains, eggs, peanuts etc.
    5. Glutathione: It is an important antioxidant found in plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria. It is helpful in preventing oxidative damage to the skin. It is used in a variety of cosmetics as an anti-aging element. It is beneficial in improving lung functions and mental functions. It improves cellular metabolism and prevents pulmonary diseases. Avocados, Brussels sprouts, peaches, peas, tomatoes, onions and red peppers are good sources of glutathione.
    6. Melatonin: It is a wide spectrum antioxidant which is soluble in water and fat both. It effectively increases the levels of glutathione in liver, blood, and brain. It helps to boost the immunity system and acts as a sleep regulator. It is found beneficial in the treatment of prostate and breast cancer. Melatonin is found in walnuts, oats, cherries, banana, pineapple, and barley.
    7. Vitamin E: It is a powerful and fat-soluble antioxidant which is beneficial for the proper functioning of body organs, enzymes, and many neurological processes. Vitamin E is helpful in treating eye disorders, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, dementia, women disorders and male impotence.
