    Natural ways to prevent dehydration this summer

    The blazing heat is at its peak these days and so the risk of dehydration. Increase in the hot and humid temperature is more likely to put at the risk of getting dehydrated. This blazing summer is one of the biggest culprits behind dehydration. Excessive exposure to heat can result in dehydration. During summers we sweat more as compared to other seasons and this sweating increase the body temperature. The demand for the fluids increases with a rise in body temperature and when the body fails to meet the demands dehydration occurs. This condition is seen more in kids and children as compared to adults. Lack of essential salts, minerals and nutrients in the body due to excessive fluid loss is termed as dehydration.

    While this unbearable heat is on, it becomes very important to learn about some home remedies to reduce or prevent the risk of dehydration.

    1. Drink plenty of water: Drinking enough water is one of the top remedies to prevent dehydration. During summers it is important to keep on drinking water at regular interval of time even if you don’t feel thirsty. An excess amount of sweat decreases the water content and fluid in the body leading to dehydration. It is recommended to drink 2-3 litres of water daily.
    2. Oral Rehydrating solution (ORS): ORS helps to restore the loss of electrolytes which occurs during dehydration. This works as a fluid replacement therapy to treat and prevent dehydration. It contains sodium, potassium and glucose which are essential to balance the electrolytes of the body. It can be made at home also. Mix 6 teaspoons of salt and 1 teaspoon of sugar in 1 litre of clean drinking water. It can be consumed within a day depending upon the age.
    3. Fruit juices: Homemade fruit juices are very much helpful in restoring the fluid loss due to dehydration. Instead of marketed and packed juices, it is recommended going for fresh homemade juices. Fruits are rich sources of vitamins and minerals which helps the body to provide essential nutrients. Also, these should be consumed in limited quantity only depending upon the sugar content present in them.
    4. Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee: Consumption of excess alcohol, tea or coffee also causes dehydration. Alcohol is like a diuretic. It leads to the dehydration of the lining of the throat. It can cause severe dehydration.
    5. Watery fruits and vegetables: Fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, and grapes are rich sources of vitamin and minerals. These can replenish the loss of electrolytes from the body. Spinach, tomatoes, cucumber, reddish are some of the vegetables which can help to restore hydration. Including such fruits and vegetables which are rich in water content in your daily diet will help the body to stay hydrated for a longer interval of time.
    6. Yogurt and cottage cheese: Yogurt is rich in potassium and sodium which helps to hydrate the body and provide essential nutrients to the body. It is easy to digest. Adding small amount of cottage cheese in yogurt makes it more effective in preventing dehydration.
    7. Bananas: Bananas are rich source of potassium and have high water content. It helps to restore the normal levels of minerals in the body. One can eat a raw banana or in the form of smoothies also to stay hydrated.
    8. Coconut water: Apart from plain water coconut water is also one of the best remedies for chronic dehydration. The high content of potassium and iron in coconut water makes it an effective remedy to fight against dehydration. Also, coconut water is low in sugar and calories and is rapidly absorbed by the cells.
